In the innocent search for free Easter clip art, you may head for a site named easterlinks.com. DO NOT GO TO THAT SITE!
The site has malicious code that will take command of your browser and not let you out of the site. While you are trying to figure out what is going on, it starts loading malicious code onto your computer and it starts extracting data, (I'm not sure what data, just know it happened to me).
ANYTIME THIS HAPPENS , your first move should be made to shut off or disconnect your internet connection, (modem, high-speed modem, DSL, etc). Then, don't turn off your computer, but have your security software perform a complete scan for viruses, spyware, etc. You will also have to wrestle with your browser settings to get them back to what they are supposed to be; otherwise, any time you open your browser it will take you immediately back to that site and proceed with its malicious intent.
This is not an easy process. After your security software has run, delete or quarantine any bad files that show up. Then, reboot your computer and repeat the virus scan, check your browser settings BEFORE reconnecting your internet connections. Hopefully, that will cure your problem.
Keep your eye on your modem to see if it is transmitting data when it should not be.
